Microsoft to Buy Health Information Search Engine

Microsoft is buying Medstory Inc., a small start-up in Foster City, Calif. Its search software applies artificial intelligence techniques to medical and health information in medical journals, government documents and on the Internet. The terms of the Medstory acquisition were not disclosed.

The Medstory purchase, said Peter Neupert, vice president for health strategy at Microsoft, was a first step in a broader company strategy to assemble technologies that would “improve the consumer experience in health care.”

The acquisition follows Microsoft’s purchase last year of Azyxxi, a clinical health care software system that retrieves and quickly displays patient information from many sources, including scanned documents, X-rays, M.R.I. scans and ultrasound images. In health-related search, Healthline Networks, a start-up in San Francisco, reports rising traffic on its Web site and a growing string of deals to provide the search engine for sites of other companies, including Merck and PacifiCare.

Microsoft, Novell to Bridge Active Directory, eDirectory

In the next phase of the two companies' much-discussed collaboration, Novell and Microsoft announced they are working together to develop a method for using existing protocols for bridging network access between eDirectory and Active Directory, with complete details to come sometime during the first half of this year.

Though the two companies did not mention this explicitly, the common bond between the two identity management services for their networks is Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Both are implementations of an LDAP store, although Microsoft utilizes a kind of abstraction layer that enables Windows Server-based networks to bind an LDAP application to a replica partition rather than specifically to an IP address. Differences in implementation such as this are why bridging the two identity services is not an academic process.

The challenge for Microsoft and Novell will be to utilize their own tools to enable single sign-on capability, which would let a user of a Windows Server-based network (or, to use Microsoft’s term for multi-domain groups, a forest) have her authentication be trusted by a Novell SuSE Enterprise Linux-served domain in the same network.

It would not be a technical first, however:third-party tools do exist for implementing single sign-on. However, such a bridge would free administrators from having to redesign their network topologies to make single sign-on easier, since that capability would have been integrated into the two operating systems.

In a joint statement this morning, the two companies also stated that work proceeds on the development of bi-directional translator software that would actively adapt Office Open XML format documents to ODF and vice versa. A more primordial format converter for both formats was completed earlier this month.

Also, Microsoft said the features will be in place for the next service pack of Virtual Server 2005 R2 to enable Novell SuSE Enterprise Linux to be installed as a guest OS in a virtualized environment. When the "Longhorn" edition of Windows Server is released later this year, SuSE Linux will be recognized as what Microsoft is calling an enlightened guest.

How Plasma TV's are made

If you're one of the many people replacing an unwieldy tube-based TV with plasma technology, you'll want to take a look at what goes on behind the screen
The process begins with the manufacturing of thin glass sheets. Plasma display-panel makers normally cut six 42-in. glass panels and four 50-in. panels from a large mother-glass- sheet. TV makers use the whole glass sheet to make a mammoth panel measuring bigger than 100 inches.

In a plasma display panel, two glass sheets sandwich a gas that turns electric signals into glowing plasma to produce visible light. High electric voltage is applied through "bus electrodes" and "sustain electrodes" to create plasma. On top of the back glass substrate, red, green, and blue phosphorescent chemicals coat divided chambers to generate different colors.

An address electrode serves as a light switch. Plasma generates ultra-violet light that stimulates phosphorescent chemicals to produce different colors of visible light. Unlike in an LCD panel, no back light is needed in a plasma display device.Engineers operate robots through computers to print phosphorescent chemicals on the back substrate of a plasma display panel.

Printed circuit boards are added to the plasma display panels to make the modules that are then sent to TV makers. Printed circuits are used to send a signal to each pixel.

Workers package plasma display modules to place them in boxes before sending them to TV manufacturers who add TV signal receivers, speakers, control panels, and covers to make sets.

Members at the quality control unit check image quality of plasma TVs.

Flat panel plasmas and LCDs vie for a spot at home, as the new era of high-definition home theater finally arrives.

Emirates Palace -The world's costliest hotel at $3.8 billion

emirates_palace.jpg
Fancy bathing in champagne, sleeping between scented sheets and cooling off round the pool with the help of hotel staff armed with water sprays? Everyone will be treated like royalty; after all, they are at the Palace. Costing a rumored $3.8 billion (£2 billion), the Emirates Palace is the most expensive hotel ever built. Its owner, the government of Abu Dhabi, knows that the Palace will never make a profit. But that doesn’t matter as the idea was to impress the world by creating the most lavish seven-star experience conceivable. Here’s an exclusive sneak preview to find out what on earth they spent all that money on. It is a colossus- the architects describe it as the Taj Mahal of the Middle East, though its dusky-pink granite and rose-colored marble facade, delicate Arabic carvings, endless domes and scalloped arches are much more in keeping with Granada’s magnificent Alhambra. Just to walk around the place would take almost an hour.

emirates_palace_1.jpg
The Emirates Palace has so many biggest and best boasts, it could have its own chapter in the Guinness Book of Records, but the atrium is the whistles and bells as the jaw-dropping 60 metres high, 42 metres wide is topped with the largest dome in the world. It is decorated with lots and lots and lots of gold- 6,040 square meters of gold leaf covers the largest gilded expanse ever created in one building. Though it boasts of the tag of the world’s costliest hotel ever built, surprisingly it doesn’t feature in our earlier write-up of the worlds 10 most expensive hotel rooms! It houses six Rulers’ Suites, strictly out of bounds unless you are part of a ruling family from one of the Gulf Co-operation Council members and another 16 Palace Suites are among the most expensive in the world at £8,000 ($15,200) a night. For the lesser souls there are 40 Khaleej Suites and 302 Grand Rooms to choose from £950 ($1,805) pp a week. Even the cheapest rooms have 125cm plasma televisions, butler service and a bath concierge to prepare a flower-strewn, oil-scented bath for you on arrival. After the initial dazzle, the interior is not nearly as lurid as the Burj Al Arab’s. The exterior of Dubai’s premier tourist address is breathtakingly elegant; inside, it divides opinion sharply though!

World’s First Floating Atomic Reactor Soon

The world’s first floating atomic reactor is being built by Russia. The nuclear reactor will be built in a place where they usually build nuclear submarines. But environmentalists are opposing this idea as they are concerned about the environmental impact which such a facility could cause. Russians claim that they are building such a facility to provide electricity to remotest part of their country. But as far as I am concerned they should consider the environmentalist’s views also and then build such a facility.

Intel Chips soon to Run at Speed of Light

Intel will soon announce a chip capable of transferring data via photons rather than the conventional wires (electrons). Since these chips are using photons (light) as the medium for data transfer, these chips can attain as high as 40GB/s of data transfer rate.

How these chips transfer data using the photons present in light:

The chip is based on a technology that allows Intel to amplify lasers in silicon and is said to now use an Indium Phosphide-based laser, which can endure higher temperatures than initial test lasers

China: Two more years to Internet No. 1?

China says it now has over 130 million Internet users. Over 50 million Chinese have broadband.

China continues to trail only the U.S. in total number of web users. Doing some quick math with China's 2006 Internet growth rate of 30 percent: It could surpass the U.S. current total of 210 million users sometime in 2008. I'm assuming the U.S. is maxed out, that Internet growth here will be slender. Few countries in the world surpass 70 percent Internet use, which is where the U.S. stands now.

Rounding out the top five: Japan, Germany and India. With a total population of over a billion people, India potentially could also pass the U.S. in Internet users. But right now it only has an estimated 40 million. That's a paltry 3.6 percent of all Indians.

Joss Stick Burning Panda

China has detained six men in their 20s for writing or profiting from a computer virus dubbed the "joss stick burning panda" which has infected more than a million PCs in the country, local media said Wednesday.

The worm wreaked havoc among individual and corporate users in China in a late-2006 outbreak, deleting files, damaging programs and attacking Web portals.

It got its name from changing icons on desktops into cute cartoon pandas, the most famous of which holds three burning joss sticks in his paws.

Chinese media have said the worm was able to steal account names of those playing online games and sending instant messages. Such account names are hotly traded with real money in China's cyberspace.

Police held Li Jun, 25, a native of Wuhan city in central China, who wrote the virus in October and had earned more than 100,000 yuan ($12,890) by selling it to about 120 people, the Beijing News said.

The other five, from three different provinces, were detained for updating and spreading the virus or for profiting from the stolen account names, the Beijing News said.

"It is the first time our country has cracked a major computer virus case," it added.

China's booming Internet is filled with technology-savvy youngsters, but problems such as hacking, virtual-property theft and addiction to online games are on the rise.

Host a Web Server on Your Pc

Step 1: Download and Run The Software

Head to www.rejetto.com/hfs/?d=dl and download the HFS or Http file server. It is free and open source and above all that its a standalone executable that requires no installation.

On XP with SP2, when you run HFS you will be asked about whether or not allow hfs.exe to connect to Internet.Unblock it and if you have 3rd party firewall you will have to configure it accordingly.

Step 2: Configure the port

By default HFS uses port 80.if you your firewall is blocking port 80, set HFS to some other port( for example to 8025 or which ever is free, as a precaution keep it above 1024)

To change the port number, turn HFS off change port no and turn it on again.

Also, if you are behind a router or firewall, you may in some rare cases, need to set up port forwarding. The best way to go about this is to go to www.portforward.com.

There you can choose the router type and choose a program you want to set up port forwarding for, which is in our case is HFS.In such case a scenario, you cannot proceed unless you know which router you are using.

Step 3: Test HFS

To test whether your settings work, click the menu in HFS and choose self test.If the test completes successfully, your settings are correct and you are ready to point your web browser to your ip address and see HFS default Web Page

Step 4: Register A domain

For setting up a web site, you need to first assign it a domain name. For this, you need to a DNS service running on your computer. There are some sites which offer this but this one is good. Go to www.no-ip.com/newUser.php to create a No-IP account.

Login to the site with the account you created. On the left-sidebar click on “Hosts/Redirects” and then Click on Add.

In the page that opens enter domain name of your choice e.g techpies and It will create a sub-domain on its own server that will work on your ip.It records it when you add the domain name.

If you ISP is blocking port 80, you can choose a redirect given under same page.

Tata Concept Car WoooooW !!!!!

Three cheers to Tata Motors…… Look at the gorgeous new Cliffrider concept car from our own tata’s… Tata Motors is India’s largest automaker showcased this vehicle at 76 th Geneva Auto Show. I am very proud that a Indian automaker is behind such a wonderful creation.. I never expected this from the Tata’s and this shows their technical prowess in automobile engineering. The Indicas and Indigos are already rocking the market and giving a run for money to all the other automakers…

Tata Motors, India ’s largest automobile company, unveiled the Tata Cliffrider, a “Multi-Utility Lifestyle Vehicle” Concept, at the 76 th Geneva Auto Show.

The Tata Cliffrider is derived from the Tata “Crossover” C oncept, which was originally unveiled at the last Geneva Auto Show. Sporting a silhouette like a high-slung sedan, the Tata Cliffrider is a dynamic package that combines lifestyle and sporty usage with the practical functionality of a pick-up truck. The Concept showcases Tata Motors’ idea of how a utility product could evolve in future for the discerning customer through a truly multi-purpose, multi-terrain usage of a car.

The exterior styling cues carry forward the visual theme of the Tata Crossover. The door trims show a continuity of form due to the disguised central pillar, with the front door hinged at its leading edge and the rear door at its trailing edge, allowing better access to the rear seats. The interior emphasises space and elegance with an innovative ventilation system and driver-oriented instrumentation stylishly packaged in the steering column. Long beam lights mounted on the roll bar and a load-body suited to carry mountain bikes, skis or snowboards reinforce the “fun and adventure” image. It can also carry goods in the load tray which can be hidden from view as well as protected from weather conditions by a sliding cover.

Configured to be fitted with a range of Euro IV engines, including a V6 Petrol and next generation Common Rail diesel power trains, it would offer multiple airbags, ABS, Traction Control, Navigation Control and a host of other contemporary features. The Tata Cliffrider would be available in 4×2 as well as 4×4 versions.

Also on display is the Tata Crossover, further updated from the Concept that Tata Motors unveiled last year. The Indica Hatchback, Indigo Sedan, Indigo Station Wagon and the Safari DiCOR Sports Utility Vehicle are also being showcased at the ongoing exposition.

Mr. Ravi Kant, Managing Director, Tata Motors, said, “ The Tata Cliffrider Concept vehicle further demonstrates Tata Motors’ commitment to innovate and address new product categories.”

Volkswagen Beetle in Barbie variant

The famous Volkswagen Beetle is now available in Barbie variant. I feel this Barbie Beetle is targeted at ladies who would love this car because of the pink paint job. But from price point of view this car is quite costly at USD $24,368 (INR 11,20,928); it looks like that this car is for Mexican market alone and only 13 of them will be built.

Store 450 GB of data on A4 Paper Sheet

An Indian engineering student has developed a data storage technology called “Rainbow Technology”. The best feature of this technology is the data is stored in ordinary paper using geometric shapes instead of digital format. Using this technique around 450GB (a modern Blu-ray disc can hold max of 50GB) of data can be stored on a single A4 sheet paper. To retrieve your data is all you need is a scanner and some specialized software which can analyze and decode your data. A paper with fully loaded data will actually look like a random modern art painting.
