World’s First Floating Atomic Reactor Soon

The world’s first floating atomic reactor is being built by Russia. The nuclear reactor will be built in a place where they usually build nuclear submarines. But environmentalists are opposing this idea as they are concerned about the environmental impact which such a facility could cause. Russians claim that they are building such a facility to provide electricity to remotest part of their country. But as far as I am concerned they should consider the environmentalist’s views also and then build such a facility.

Intel Chips soon to Run at Speed of Light

Intel will soon announce a chip capable of transferring data via photons rather than the conventional wires (electrons). Since these chips are using photons (light) as the medium for data transfer, these chips can attain as high as 40GB/s of data transfer rate.

How these chips transfer data using the photons present in light:

The chip is based on a technology that allows Intel to amplify lasers in silicon and is said to now use an Indium Phosphide-based laser, which can endure higher temperatures than initial test lasers

China: Two more years to Internet No. 1?

China says it now has over 130 million Internet users. Over 50 million Chinese have broadband.

China continues to trail only the U.S. in total number of web users. Doing some quick math with China's 2006 Internet growth rate of 30 percent: It could surpass the U.S. current total of 210 million users sometime in 2008. I'm assuming the U.S. is maxed out, that Internet growth here will be slender. Few countries in the world surpass 70 percent Internet use, which is where the U.S. stands now.

Rounding out the top five: Japan, Germany and India. With a total population of over a billion people, India potentially could also pass the U.S. in Internet users. But right now it only has an estimated 40 million. That's a paltry 3.6 percent of all Indians.

NVIDIA to Enter x86 CPU Market

Nvidia is planning to enter x86 CPU market by 2008, Nvidia is builiding an integerated CPU+GPU x86 CPU which is expected to compete with mighty Intel and AMD. Nvidia is developing this CPU with ex-Intel engineers from Stexar (a company founded by ex-Intel Engineers). The CPU’s from Nvidia are expected to be built using 45nm or 65nm technology, the techincal specifications of these CPU are not yet known.

EVD (Enhanced Video Disc)

The specification detailing the new format, called EVD (Enhanced Video Disc), is now complete, and was formally presented in Beijing on Thursday to the Chinese Ministry of Information Industries (MII) and the Standardisation Administration of China (SAC).

Like DVD, EVD video data is compressed, but according to the format's developers, Beijing-based E-World and US digital video technology company On2, it is capable of displaying HDTV images, a feat currently not possible with the established standard.Capacity Upto 50 Gb . It stores 10 Gb of data in 5 layers .
